Pune revenue officials approach cops against man who took over 18 acres of forest land using fake ministerial order

Pune city police said Saturday that they are in the process of filing an FIR against a Hadapsar resident who allegedly produced fake documents in the name of a former minister and attempted to assume ownership of about 18 acres of forest land estimated to be worth over Rs 200 crores in the market. Revenue officials in Pune had submitted a complaint against the man on Friday.

Baffled district officials have now cancelled the land transfer in the name of the individual identified by the police as P P Shitkal. He had submitted fake documents from 2018 in the name of the then Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil who is now chief of the state BJP unit.

“The documents made us believe that the order was indeed issued by the minister on 31.1.2018 and we had, therefore, transferred the forest land in his name,” Haveli tehsildar Trupti Kolte told The Indian Express on Saturday.

How to unleash the entrepreneurial power of 1.3 billion Indians

In 1893, a 12-day sea journey from Japan to Canada sparked multiple conversations between two remarkable Indians travelling independently to attend the World Parliament of Religions and a Technology Expo. Swami Vivekananda convinced Jamsetji Tata that technology can be imported but scientific temper cannot be bought and must be built within a country. A direct outcome of this chance encounter was Jamsetji setting up the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. An indirect outcome was a technology-encouraging culture at the Tatas that pioneered India’s software industry in the 1960s: India now exports more software than Saudi Arabia does oil. Covid and recent Chinese events have increased India’s attractiveness to global investors. We make the case for unshackling 1.3 billion Indians with a surgical strike on the regulatory cholesterol that sabotages our productivity.

Tokyo Paralympics: Pramod Bhagat wins first ever badminton gold for India

India’s Pramod Bhagat won the Men’s Singles SL3 event badminton gold medal match against Great Britain’s Daniell Bethell at the Tokyo Paralympics on Saturday. This is India’s first medal in badminton at the Paralympics Games. Manoj Sarkar beat Daisuke Fujihara of Japan and clinched the Bronze medal in the same category.

So far, India has won 17 medals at the Paralympics – four gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.

Bhagat was 8 points behind in the second game before making a comeback and wrapping up the match 21-14, 21-17.

The 33-year-old Bhagat from Bhubaneswar also remains in contention for a bronze medal in mixed doubles SL3-SU5 class. Bhagat and his partner Palak Kohli will square off against Japanese pair of Daisuke Fujihara and Akiko Sugino in the bronze medal play off on Sunday.

They had lost the semifinals 3-21 15-21 to Indonesian combination of Hary Susanto and Leani Ratri Oktila earlier in the day.

Bhagat, who had contracted polio when he was 4 years old, picked up the sports after watching his neighbours play.

Initially, he competed against able-bodied players before getting into competitive para badminton in 2006.

He eventually emerged as one of the best para shuttlers in the country with 45 international medals under his belt, including four world championship gold medals and a gold and a bronze in 2018 Asian Para Games.

He also had started his career as a badminton coach but took a break in 2019 to focus on Tokyo Paralympics qualification.

In 2019, he received the Arjuna Award and Biju Patnaik Award for Excellence in Sports in India.

Earlier in the day, Suhas Yathiraj and Krishna Nagar also sailed into the men’s singles finals of SL4 class and SH6 class respectively.

EC announces bypoll for Mamata Banerjee’s home constituency, 3 others in Bengal and Odisha

The Election Commission Saturday announced the bypoll for the Bhabanipur constituency — Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s home turf — in Kolkata. The bypoll is set to be held on September 30 while the votes will be counted on October 3.

The seat fell vacant after veteran Trinamool Congress leader and minister Shovandev Chattopadhyay’s post-poll resignation.

Apart from Bhabanipur, elections in West Bengal’s Samshergunj and Jangipur and Odisha’s Pipli constituencies will be held on the same day.

The commission held meetings with Chief Secretaries and Chief Electoral Officers and took their opinion. In a statement, the poll panel said, “He (Chief Secretary of West Bengal) has also informed that in view of administrative exigencies and public interest and to avoid vacuum in the state, the bye-election for 159-Bhabanipur AC, Kolkata from where Ms Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister intends to contest elections may be conducted.”

The commission added Covid protocols will be maintained during the whole process. In indoor campaigns, not more than 30% of the capacity and in outdoor campaigns not more than 50% of the capacity will be allowed.

The number of star campaigners has also been restricted and regulations announced for door-to-door campaigns, road shows, street corner meetings and other means of campaigns.

The silence period before the poll will be for 72 hours. No motorcycle or cycle rallies will be allowed and only those who have been fully-vaccinated will be allowed for poll duty.

The Big Bang Theory actor Kaley Cuoco, husband Karl Cook announce separation

Hollywood actor Kaley Cuoco and her husband Karl Cook have called it quits after three years of marriage. In a joint statement issued to People magazine on Friday, Cuoco and Cook announced that they have amicably made the decision to go their separate ways.

“Despite a deep love and respect for one another, we have realised that our current paths have taken us in opposite directions. We have both shared so much of our journey publicly so while we would prefer to keep this aspect of our personal life private, we wanted to be forthcoming in our truth together,” they said in the statement.

Cuoco, 35, and Cook, 30, further said that there is “no anger or animosity” between them.

“We have made this decision together through an immense amount of respect and consideration for one another and request that you do the same in understanding that we will not be sharing any additional details or commenting further,” they added.

Cuoco, known for starring in shows such as The Big Bang Theory and Flight Attendant, started dating Cook, a professional equestrian, in 2016 and got engaged the next year.

They tied the knot in June 2018 in a small ceremony in San Diego, California.
